    Beach News

Summer is here.... and the beach will be open full time (10:30am to 6pm) on June 26, 2013. Until than, weekends only. New sand has been spread, ropes and swim rafts are in the water and many familiar faces will back working at the beach this summer. We are happy to announce that Sabrina Fleming will not only be teaching children how to swim, but also serve as Beach Manager. James Merse is our Head Lifeguard and is busy putting together the swim lesson schedule. Swim lessons will begin on Monday, June 25, 2012.

We want to remind the POA membership that we have new beach hours this summer. The beach will open at 10:30 each day and will close at 6:00, including Saturday and Sunday. We are happy to announce that the beach will continue the tradition of staying open until 8:00pm on Wednesdays. In the past years, we have been able to coordinate kids’ activities on Wednesday evenings to coincide with the later beach closing. We would like to continue this but have a severe lack of volunteers. There will be a sign up sheet at the gate for people who would be willing to assist or run these small activities. Please help us continue the ice cream socials, candy bar bingo and other family fun events; we would hate to see them cancelled this year.

Once again the beach will be carry in/carry out and we will not have trash cans on the beach. This policy has significantly decreased our bee population. Also, remember that glass is not allowed on the beach for safety reasons. Last year we had many requests and now are happy to announce that the beach will now be a NO SMOKING area! There will be a suggestion box kept at the gate if members have any other suggestions or concerns during the summer.

What we really need are volunteers to help us add additional activities during the week for the children on the beach. Many of you spend quite a bit of time here with your children. Last year it was great to see girls creating friendship bracelets out of thread with our lifeguards. Although we encourage our guards to play with the children during the summer, it is important to remember that our lifeguards’ number one priority is the safety of the people in the water and on the beach. So the call is out for our beach community to assist us in making this the best summer ever!

We look forward to seeing you on the beach and wish you all a fun summer in the water and on the sand. Remember to send an e-mail to: beach@uglpoa.co asking to be included in our beach e-mail blasts during the summer.
